๐
Date of Update: June 17, 2025
๐ฐ Redemption Price: โน9,919 per unit
Whatโs the Update?
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced the redemption price for investors who wish to prematurely redeem their Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2017-18 Series XII on the upcoming due date โ June 18, 2025.
According to the Government of India notification (F. No. 4(25)-(W&M)/2017), premature redemption is allowed after the 5th year from the date of issue. This specific series was issued on December 18, 2017, and thus becomes eligible for redemption from June 18, 2025, which is also an interest payout date.
How Is the Redemption Price Calculated?
The redemption price of an SGB unit is calculated as per the average closing price of gold (999 purity) for the last three business days before redemption, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA).
For this round:
- The relevant dates are: June 13, June 16, and June 17, 2025
- The average closing price for those three days resulted in a final redemption price of โน9,919 per gram
Each unit of SGB represents 1 gram of gold, so investors will receive โน9,919 per unit they redeem.
Who Should Pay Attention?
๐น Retail Investors who invested in the SGB 2017-18 Series XII
๐น Senior citizens or early exit seekers looking for liquidity before 8-year maturity
๐น Wealth Managers and Financial Planners advising clients on gold investments
๐น Bankers and Branch Officials handling redemption and query processing
Should You Redeem Now?
Hereโs what you should consider:
- โ If you need liquidity, this is a tax-efficient exit (capital gains on SGBs are tax-free on maturity/premature redemption for individuals).
- ๐ If you believe gold prices will rise further, you might consider holding the bond till full maturity in 2025.
- ๐งพ Check your demat or physical SGB certificate and ensure your bank or broker has your redemption details updated.
๐ Important Reminder
- This redemption is optional. If you do not wish to redeem now, your bond will continue to earn annual interest (2.5%) and will mature in December 2025.
