Police Warn Residents Against Fake Officer Scams
Bengaluru’s Yelahanka locality was shaken by a daring daylight robbery where four men, disguised as Income Tax officers, entered a family home and fled with cash and jewellery worth around Rs. 1.5 crore. The crime left residents alarmed and police scrambling to track down the impostors.
Crime in Disguise
The targeted house belonged to Giriraju, who had kept large sums of cash at home for a land purchase. On the day of the incident, a white Toyota Innova with a fake number plate pulled up outside his residence. Four men stepped out, dressed smartly in white shirts and ties—an appearance that instantly created an air of authority.
Claiming to be officials from the Income Tax Department, the group confidently convinced the family of their false identity. Once inside, they seized all mobile phones, locked the family in one room, and began searching the house without resistance.
A Quick and Calculated Getaway
Within minutes, the gang located the bag containing Rs. 1.5 crore in cash from the kitchen and also took about 50 grams of gold jewellery. Before escaping, they swapped the fake number plate on their vehicle to mislead investigators. By the time the family managed to raise an alarm, the robbers had vanished.
Police Investigation Underway
The family filed a complaint at the Yelahanka Police Station, following which a case was registered. Police teams are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and suspect the gang may belong to a larger network that specialises in impersonating government officers. City checkpoints have been tightened and surveillance increased to catch the culprits.
Authorities Issue Warning
Senior police officers urged citizens to be vigilant and verify identification before allowing anyone claiming to represent government agencies into their homes. They stressed the need for immediate public awareness, warning that such scams exploit people’s trust in authority.

For Giriraju’s family, the traumatic experience lingers, while Bengaluru residents are left unsettled by a crime that required no weapons—just deception. The case highlights how criminals are adopting new tactics, relying on disguises and fabricated stories to gain access to unsuspecting victims. Police have assured swift action, but the incident serves as a stark reminder: not every knock at the door is safe, even when it looks official.
