New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this year’s Navratri carries special significance as it coincides with the rollout of the GST Savings Festival. He called on citizens to embrace Swadeshi practices and contribute towards building a developed and self-reliant India.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi said that the festive occasion would “infuse fresh energy into the spirit of Swadeshi,” urging people to channel their efforts towards strengthening the country’s economic and social fabric through unity and collective resolve.
GST Cuts Linked to Festive Relief
The GST Council’s decision to slash rates on nearly 375 goods and services has come into effect from September 22, coinciding with the first day of Navratri. Modi described it as a “GST Bachat Utsav (savings festival)” and added that the move, along with the higher income tax exemption of ₹12 lakh, would provide a “double bonanza” for households.
GST will now function with just two slabs — 5% and 18%. Everyday essentials such as food items, medicines, soap, toothpaste, and health and life insurance will either be exempt or taxed at the lowest 5% rate. According to the Prime Minister, the combined benefit of GST cuts and income tax relief will help households save up to ₹2.5 lakh crore annually.
“This is a double bonanza for the poor, the neo-middle class and the middle class. With reduced GST, it will become easier for families to fulfil their aspirations,” PM Modi said.
What Gets Cheaper
- Food & FMCG: Ghee, paneer, butter, namkeen, ketchup, jam, dry fruits, coffee, and ice creams
- Electronics & Appliances: TVs, ACs, washing machines, refrigerators
- Healthcare: Medicines, formulations, medical devices such as glucometers and diagnostic kits (GST cut to 5%)
- Construction: Cement (GST reduced to 18% from 28%)
Several FMCG companies have already announced reductions in line with the GST rationalisation, while industries such as healthcare and construction are also expected to benefit from lower input costs.
