The government has officially launched the Cashless Treatment of Road Accident Victims Scheme, 2025 on a national scale. It was notified via S.O. 2015(E) on 5th May, 2025, with detailed guidelines issued under S.O. 2489(E) dated 4th June, 2025.
Free treatment up to Rs. 1.5 lakh for victims
Under this scheme, any road accident victim caused by a motor vehicle is eligible for cashless treatment of up to Rs. 1.5 lakh per person. The medical assistance is available for a maximum of 7 days from the date of the accident at any designated hospital across India.
Not part of Ayushman Bharat, but leverages national health IT system
Though this initiative is not covered under Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PM-JAY), it is a statutory scheme that aims to ensure timely and equitable trauma care. The scheme utilizes the National Health Authorityโs IT platform for hassle-free registration, verification, and claims processing.
Funding from insurers and central government
The scheme is jointly funded. If the offending vehicle is insured, general insurance companies will cover the cost. In case the accident involves an uninsured vehicle, the central government will provide the funds.
Budget allocation for uninsured cases
For the financial year 2025-26, the government has allocated Rs. 272 crore as budgetary support under this scheme for cases involving uninsured vehicles.
