UPI overpayment scams are becoming increasingly common, targeting unsuspecting users by sending small fake transfers and tricking them into sending money back or revealing sensitive information. Here’s how these scams typically work — and how you can stay protected.
🔍 How the Scam Works:
- Fake Transfer: A scammer sends a small amount of money to your UPI-linked account.
- “Mistake” Claim: They contact you and say the payment was made by mistake, requesting a refund.
- Overpayment Trap: They may ask you to return more than they sent or try to steal your credentials by asking for UPI PIN, OTP, etc.
- Account Hacking: If you return money or share sensitive info, they can hack your account and drain your funds.
🛡️ How to Protect Yourself:
- Verify the Sender: Always verify unknown UPI transfers via your app or bank before taking any action.
- Don’t Return Money Immediately: Never send back money without confirming the transaction with your bank.
- Don’t Share Sensitive Info: Your UPI PIN, OTP, and credentials must never be shared—banks will never ask for them.
- Report the Incident: If you suspect a scam, immediately report it to your bank, the UPI app, and local police.
