Chief Manager Dies by Suicide in Baramati, Cites Work Pressure in Note

Baramati, Pune |
In a tragic incident that has sent shockwaves through the banking community, a senior official of a nationalised bank died by suicide late Thursday night inside the bank’s branch premises in Baramati, Pune district. The official was identified as Shivshankar Mitra, reportedly in his late 40s, who was serving as Chief Manager.

According to police sources, Mitra had submitted his resignation on July 11, citing health concerns and mounting work pressure. He was currently serving his notice period at the time of the incident.

📹 Events Leading to the Tragedy

As per the Baramati Police, the incident occurred after banking hours on Thursday. Mitra reportedly instructed all staff to leave, stating that he would close the branch himself. Around 9:30 p.m., the bank’s watchman also left the premises.

Earlier that day, Mitra had allegedly asked a colleague to bring a rope — a detail that has now become a significant part of the investigation. At approximately 10:00 p.m., he was seen hanging himself with the rope inside the branch. The entire incident was captured on the bank’s CCTV cameras, now being reviewed by authorities.

A suicide note was recovered from the scene, in which Mitra explicitly cited work-related stress and pressure as the reason for his drastic step.

👮 Police Statement

“This is a deeply unfortunate incident. The deceased had mentioned in his resignation that he was struggling with health issues and workload. A suicide note found at the scene confirms that he was under intense pressure,” said an official from the Baramati police station.

🏦 A Wake-Up Call for the Banking Sector?

The incident has reignited conversations around mental health and workload stress in the Indian banking sector, especially in public sector banks. Employee unions and welfare groups have long expressed concern over long hours, staff shortages, and mounting performance pressure.

🕯️ Mourning and Investigation

Colleagues remembered Mitra as a dedicated officer with a calm demeanor. The bank’s management has expressed condolences to the bereaved family and has assured full cooperation with the ongoing investigation.

The police have registered a case of unnatural death, and further inquiries are underway.
