Quick Comparison: Before vs After

Rule Before Now
Request Money Feature Available (users could send requests to others) Discontinued (to curb scams)
UPI Transaction Limit ₹1 lakh ₹5 lakh
AutoPay Option Not available Introduced (EMIs, subscriptions, utility bills)

UPI Request Payment Feature Discontinued

Until now, UPI users could send a payment request to friends or relatives, who could then approve and send money. However, scammers began exploiting this feature to trick people into authorizing fraudulent transactions. To curb these scams, NPCI has discontinued the payment request service effective today.

UPI Transaction Limit Raised to ₹5 Lakh

At the same time, NPCI has increased the UPI transaction limit five-fold. Earlier, users could transfer up to ₹1 lakh in a single transaction. Now, this limit has been expanded to ₹5 lakh, giving users more flexibility for higher-value payments.

Introduction of AutoPay on UPI

Another major addition is the AutoPay feature. With this, users can set up pre-authorized recurring payments for:

  • EMIs and insurance premiums
  • Subscriptions (OTT platforms, apps, etc.)
  • Utility bills like electricity and water

This ensures timely payments without late fees or penalties, offering a hassle-free digital experience.

UPI: A Digital Revolution

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, UPI usage has grown exponentially. From paying a local vegetable vendor to settling monthly EMIs, UPI has become a part of everyday life. These changes will further strengthen UPI’s role in India’s journey toward a cashless, digital economy.

Note: These changes are effective immediately. Users are advised to update their apps and explore the new AutoPay option. Always remain alert to potential fraud and never approve unknown UPI requests.
