As Navratri lights up the city and Diwali shopping begins, Mumbaikars are already
benefiting from the newly introduced GST 2.0 reforms. From Dadar’s electronics hubs to Andheri’s fashion arcades,retailers report a clear uptick in demand thanks to lower GST rates on everyday essentials, white goods, and entry-level vehicles.
Simplified GST Slabs Drive Savings
Effective September 22, the revamped regime streamlines the previous four-rate structure into two main slabs of
5% and 18%, with a new 40% bracket for luxury and “sin” goods.
Essential items—including several packaged foods, personal care products, and some dairy goods—have moved to lower slabs or exemptions.
Consumer durables such as TVs, ACs, and dishwashers that were earlier at 28% now mostly fall under
18%, translating into meaningful price cuts.
Electronics and Appliances See a Festive Surge
The rate reductions are amplifying festive sentiment. Large retail chains like Croma, Reliance Retail, and Vijay Sales
report heavy footfall and stronger conversions. Customers are upgrading—32-inch TVs are giving way to
43-inch models, and higher-efficiency inverter ACs are gaining traction.
Fashion and Apparel Benefit from GST Cuts
Smaller retailers in Andheri and Dadar note steady demand and expect a sharper spike closer to Diwali.
Big fashion chains (Reliance Trends, Ajio, Trent, Aditya Birla Fashion) are seeing improved footfall,
aided by discounted sales as GST on man-made fibres and ready-made apparel is now 5%.
Automobile Purchases Encouraged
Middle-class buyers benefit from lower GST on scooters up to 350cc and small petrol cars up to
1,200cc, reduced from 28% to 18%. The cut eases EMIs and nudges
first-time purchases. Large cars remain at 40% GST, though the additional cess has been removed—helping
some buyers step up to higher trims at earlier budget points.
